(VNS- 11/4/2002)- The Republic of Korea(RoK), a successful model of applying Information Technology and Telecommunications as alocomotive for economic growth, has expressed its readiness to share with Viet Nam itsrich experience in these areas.

RoK Prime MinisterLee Han Dong, who is on an official visit to this country, made this offer at a RoK-VietNam forum in Ha Noi yesterday.

Lee said that IT and telecom, key infrastructure pillarsof modern society, not only play a significant role in the economy but also impact on allsocial and political aspects of a nation.

Viet Nam 's Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem affirmedin response that the Government attached great importance to the IT and telecom sectors,regarding them as a spearhead for economic growth in a knowledge-based milieu.

He also thanked the RoK Government for its support andappreciated the effective co-operation between IT and telecom companies from the twocountries. He stressed the need for Viet Nam to reform the organisational and managementstructures in the IT and telecom industries and give priority to improving the legal andinvestment environment.

Participants in yesterday's forum discussed a number ofissues relating to the industry's development in the context of the rising trend oftechnology convergence and integration of services.

Other officials concerned with the sectors briefed RoKbusinesses on Viet Nam's policies and strategies to forge internal strength and

international co-operation, especially in research anddevelopment and human resources development.

Key, they said, is to tailor the existing organisationaland management mechanisms to meet the requirements of evolving situations.

And to this end, Viet Nam will continue to strengthen itslegal framework, create a level playing field for companies, encourage new businesses toinvest and develop, meet the needs for socio-economic development, and protect the rightsof consumers.
