(SGT- 11/3/2002)- The Corral Line Vessel fromAustralia is expected to berth Saigon Port on Wednesday to deliver the largest-evershipment of 1,086 cows to Vietnam to date as the result of a contract signed by Nong VietCo. Ltd. (Novico) with its partner in Australia.

Theherd includes 778 Holstein Friesian dairy cows with the majority being pregnant for two tosix months, 256 young dairy ones, 208 Drought Master breeder cows and 100 others for meat. The Dutch-origin mammals raised in Australia are said to be suitable to the weather inVietnam.

The cows weighing between 300 and 600 kilograms canproduce an average 6,000 liters of milk each for a circle, while-the yield of a domesticcow is only 3,700-4,000 liters, Novico chairman Pham Minh Thai told the Daily.

Previously, Novico contracted to buy 1,098 cows raised inNorth Queensland, a well-known cow raising region in Australia. However, Australianveterinarians could choose only 1,086 qualified cows for export to Vietnam afterinspections.

The partner and veterinarians in Australia wereresponsible for quarantine inspections before delivery. To ensure healthy cows, theVietnam Veterinary Bureau has told Novico to carry out nine more tests on the importedherd with each time costing US$58.

Thai said the cows upon being disembarked would betransported to Novico's farm in Binh Duong Province for tests within 30 days before theyare handed over to Vietnamese buyers at a price of US$1,250 each.

Novico imported 941 cows from Australia last year andleased two hectares at the Cattle Raising Center under the Vietnam Veterinary Bureau inthe southern province to build the farm.

During the tests, Australian experts will provideofficials of Vietnamese buyers with skills and knowledge of nutrition, health and ways toexploit milk and select foods for the cows.

Novico itself will raise 208 breeder cows. The companywill then sell 300 dairy cows to HCMC Dairy Cow Co., 200 ones to an enterprise in An GiangProvince, 100 to each of Lam Son Sugar Shareholding Co. in Thanh Hoa Province and Song HauFarm in Can Tho, and 50 to Gia Dinh Cow Raising Cooperatives Union in HCMC. The averageprice is US$1,250 a cow, Thai said.

Novico will also import some 1,200 cows from Australianext month, mostly dairy ones to fulfill domestic orders and to meet the .increasingdemand for an estimated 5,000 cows in HCMC and the southern provinces.

However, procedures for cow imports are still complicatedin Vietnam. Thai said he had had the purchasing contract approved at many relevantagencies before he could open a letter of credit
