President Sam Nujoma of the Republic of Namibia starts his three-day official visit to Vietnam today, July 27, at the invitation of President Tran Duc Luong.

President Sam Nujoma is expected to hold talks with his Vietnamese counterpart, Tran Duc Luong and meet other top leaders of Vietnam.

This is Sam Nujoma's first visit to Vietnam in his capacity as president of Namibia and his second visit to the country after the first one in 1975 as chairman of the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO).

Vietnam and Namibia established diplomatic ties on March 21, 1990 - the day Namibia declared its independence.

Vietnam recognised SWAPO as the sole legitimate representative of the Namibian people and supported their past struggle for the liberation of the southwest African people.

Namibia has always highly appreciated the Vietnamese people's support for its struggle and has always taken great inspiration from President Ho Chi Minh.

Namibia is one of the countries actively supporting Vietnam's joining the executive board of the United Nations Economic and Social Council and the World Trade Organisation.
