Handicraft
Vietnamese people are hardworking with skilful hands, which makes handicrafts flourish in many areas with different families. Vietnamese pottery, bamboo crafts, silk, silverwares and ivory products were exported through Van Don, Ke Cho, Pho Hien Thuan An, Hoi An, Ben Nghe and other ports in the past. From the beginning of the 20th century, Vietnam’s handicraft products have often been seen in trade fairs in France. Today, handicrafts are always on the list of export goods from Vietnam.
Vietnamese
handicrafts faced fierce competition from similar products in neighbouring
countries. This forced producers to remodel and improve quality and appearance
to keep customers. Improvements and remodelling were seen in many products
including carpets, bamboo curtains and wooden ware as well as in pottery and
chinaware. This helped Vietnamese businesses to win more customers. A Danish
customer has switched all orders for pottery and chinaware from neighbouring
countries to Vietnam. Another company from Spain ordered four containers of hats
to sell to carnival goers there. The order provided jobs for all the people in
Chuong village in Ha Tay province, which makes the hats.
Vietnamese handicrafts also reflect Vietnamese culture and identity. Many tourists to Vietnam buy these products as souvenirs.
