Coffee
After the reunification of the country in 1975, there were about 13,600 hectares of coffee in the country with an average yield of 440 kilograms per hectare and total production of 6,100 tonnes.
In order to exploit the advantage of soil, climate and labour force of the country, immediately after the reunification, the government had a development plan for coffee as a major source of export, especially for remote and rural areas.
Since then the industry has shown steady growth, taking a more important position in the national economy.
By the end of 1999, there were 420,000 hectares of coffee nationwide with two distinctive areas for robusta coffee from Tay Nguyen and arabica coffee from Thua Thien-Hue northwards. Coffee production has reached more than 540,000 tonnes (nine million bags). In the 2000-2001 crop, this figure may reach 10 million bags, an increase of 30 times in cultivated area and 100 times in yield.
Vietnamese coffee is sold in 53 countries including the United States (20.8%), Germany (13.13 %), Italy (18.84%) and Belgium (8.4%).
Vietnamese robusta coffee yield is the highest in the world, at an average of 1.7 tonnes per hectare. The yield is recorded at more than two tonnes per hectare in Dac Lac.
Vietnamese coffee is popular thanks to its taste and fragrance. This has helped expand the markets for coffee
