MCA praises Dr M over economic feat
KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA has commended Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad for steering Malaysia to recovery after the Sept 11 terrorist attacks in the United States brought about worldwide economic and political uncertainties.
Describing the feat as remarkable, party president Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik attributed the impressive performance to the “bold but prudent and sound measures” taken by the Government under the Prime Minister’s leadership.
“Despite all the economic difficulties and political crises, the nation has emerged stronger under the visionary and dynamic leadership of our Prime Minister.
“MCA and the nation still need Dr Mahathir’s leadership. However, we fully understand and respect his decision to retire and his choice of handing over the helm to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
“MCA pledges the same full and undivided support it has steadfastly given to Dr Mahathir for Abdullah,” he said at the opening of the MCA annual general meeting yesterday.
A total of 2,288 or 81.57% of the 2,805 central delegates attended the AGM.
Dr Ling, who is also the Transport Minister, said harmony and understanding among multi-ethnic Malaysians had given the nation great strength and this must be upheld as the country moved towards developed nation status.
“Malaysia had a 1.1% growth in the first quarter of this year after two quarters of decline.
“This signals a strong recovery and GDP growth for 2002 is projected at between 3.5% and 4%,” he said.
Dr Ling said the transport sector had performed well, adding that Port Klang, the world’s 12th largest port, handled four million TEUs (20 feet equivalent units) of containers last year – a four-fold increase from the 90s.
The Port of Tanjung Pelepas had created a new world record by handling two million TEUs of containers within two years of operation.
The KL International Airport – the world’s third best airport – had the potential to become a regional hub.
“The double-tracking rail project in the peninsula currently in progress is another major achievement,” he said.
Dr Ling also recorded MCA’s deepest appreciation to Dr Mahathir for his guidance and advice in resolving the party’s internal problems.
“Unity within MCA is paramount for it to be a valued partner in the coalition.
“Opponents outside Barisan will take advantage of any dissent and disunity within the party,” he stressed.
Dr Ling also spoke on the country’s role in fighting terrorism and extremism locally and abroad, k-economy, information technology, the development of small and medium scale industries and the party’s educational projects.
