INDONESIA WILL
IMPORT VIET NAM'S RICE
Ha Noi, March 8 (VNA) -- The Indonesian Government
has said that it will import 500,000 tonnes of rice from Viet
Nam, or half of its total one million tonne rice import this
year and 300,000 tonnes more than planned.
The figure includes the shipment of 100,000 tonnes
in January and another 100,000 tonnes scheduled for this month.
In the first two months of this year, Viet Nam's
exports of rice and other farm products registered a significant
year-on-year fall as a result of price fluctuations in the world
market.
The Trade Minisry has adjusted its rice export
market structure this year in order to make it suitable to world
market changes and domestic production restructuring.
Accordingly, Asia and Africa remain major markets
for Viet Nam's rice exports. This year, Viet Nam plans to export
2.2 million tonnes of rice to Asia, an increase of 500,000
tonnes, and 850,000 tonnes to Africa, a rise of 150,000 tonnes.
In addition, the country's rice shipments to
America and Europe will stand at about 300,000 tonnes each, but
its rice exports to the Middle East will fall sharply this year.
Apart from the efforts from businesses, the
Government will continue to sign government-to-government
contracts and agreements with other countries which need to
import large quantities of rice from Viet Nam. The Government
will also draw up its policy to support imports in order to help
all businesses as a means of promoting rice exports to major
markets.
This year, Viet Nam is expected to export 4 million
tonnes of rice, earning USD 640 million, an increase of 4.1
percent over last year.--VNA
